This song was popular in the 1970’s when I was growing up. I could relate to it when I played the piano and sang as part of my work at the nursing home. It still strikes a chord today when I entertain at such facilities once a month. The only difference between my situation and that of the pianist in the song is the setting. Enjoy, and have a great Saturday.

Did you know that he wrote it about his experience at a bar. He had a six-month gig there. Billy Joel also was in a group called The Hassles. They released two dreadful records before breaking up. I’ve also heard that Billy was ashamed of those records. I had them at one time and I totally agree with him. I’m also told that people who worked with Billy found him to be the only rock star without a swelled ego.

Thank you, Bruce, for this information. I figured as much about what inspired Billy Joel to write the song. I didn’t know about his previous band and their record.
