This week’s theme is “search.” The song is about a whole town searching for a band of escaped jail inmates who will never be found. When I was in the sixth or seventh grade, my family was living in Sheridan, Wyoming, and my father sold and serviced coin-operated machines.
I had a remote control unit and speaker in my bedroom that were connected to a jukebox downstairs. “Band on the Run” was one of many songs I listened to frequently. In case you’re wondering what kind of parents I had that allowed their child to listen to a song about escaped criminals never being found, let me assure you that although I loved the song and still do, I never grew up to be part of a band on the run. Enjoy the song, and have a great day.

Band on the Run–Paul McCartney
Lyrics Courtesy of Google
Stuck inside these four walls
Sent inside forever
Never seeing no one
Nice again like you
Mama you, mama you
If I ever get out of her,
Thought of giving it all away
To a registered charity.
All I need is a pint a day
If I ever get outta here
If we ever get outta of here
Well, the rain exploded with a mighty crash
As we fell into the sun
And the first one said to the second one there
I hope you’re having fun
Band on the run, band on the run
And the jailer man and sailor Sam
Were searching every one
For the band on the run
Band on the run
Band on the run
Band on the run
Well, the undertaker drew a heavy sigh
Seeing no one else had come
And a bell was ringing in the village square
For the rabbits on the run
Band on the run
Band on the run
And the jailer man and sailor Sam
Were searching every one
For the band on the run
Band on the run
Yeah the band on the run
Band on the run
Band on the run
Band on the run
Well, the night was falling as the desert world
Began to settle down.
In the town they’re searching for us everywhere
But we never will be found
Band on the run
Band on the run
And the county judge who held a grudge
Will search for evermore
For the band on the run
Band on the run
Band on the run
Band on the run

Abbie,
You know I never thought about the lyrics being about a band of criminals, I literally thought the band on the run was a mewsic band. lol It’s funny how I never gave the words of this song much thought before. Don’t worry I’m sure most folks don’t hold your parents against your mewsic choices. I’m sure like most from the Beatles era they just tried to not listen to what was playing. lol Thanks for opening up the truth of these lyrics to my ignorance. 🙂 Have a songsational Sunday!

You’re welcome, Cathy. You’re not the only one who misunderstood song lyrics in your youth. In those days, I usually chose my favorites because of melodic or harmonic patterns or the beat. Thank you for stopping by.

Great pick for the theme. It’s funny how it’s about a band of criminals, but it’s sort of a languid, slow song. It does pick up, but not really enough to make me think “criminals”, you know? 🙂

Since the song talks about them being in jail and the jailor searching for them, I assumed… I suppose it could be interpreted a different way. Thank you for your observation.
