What Harms the Environment? #SixSentenceStoryThursdayLinkUp #WritingPrompts #Inspiration

During these hot summer days, some question the frequency of air conditioner usage. They think air conditioners are harmful to the environment. Well, so is smoke. So is the exhaust from vehicles. I just heard that farting isn’t good for the environment, either. What’ll it be next, belching?

Thanks to GirlieOnTheEdge for inspiring the above with her six-sentence prompt for this week in which the given word is “frequency,” and the idea is to write something in at least six sentences, using the word at least once. Independently published with the help of DLD Books.

The cover of the book features an older woman sitting in a wicker chair facing a window. The world beyond the window is bright, and several plants are visible on the terrace. Behind the woman’s chair is another plant, with a tall stalk and wide rounded leaves. The woman has short, white hair, glasses, a red sweater, and tan pants. The border of the picture is a taupe color and reads "Why Grandma Doesn't Know Me" above the photo and "Abbie Johnson Taylor" below it.

Sixteen-year-old Natalie’s grandmother, suffering from dementia and confined to a wheelchair, lives in a nursing home and rarely recognizes Natalie. But one Halloween night, she tells her a shocking secret that only she and Natalie’s mother know. Natalie is the product of a one-night stand between her mother, who is a college English teacher, and another professor.

After some research, Natalie learns that people with dementia often have vivid memories of past events. Still not wanting to believe what her grandmother has told her, she finds her biological father online. The resemblance between them is undeniable. Not knowing what else to do, she shows his photo and website to her parents.

Natalie realizes she has some growing up to do. Scared and confused, she reaches out to her biological father, and they start corresponding.

Her younger sister, Sarah, senses their parents’ marital difficulties. At Thanksgiving, when she has an opportunity to see Santa Claus, she asks him to bring them together again. Can the jolly old elf grant her request?

  1. This is funny. I’ve heard that Cows farts and belches aren’t good for the environment. Our society does use too much electricity which is draining our resources. Fans use just as much power and people need to keep from passing out during heat waves It’s a Catch 22.

    1. While some of that may be to the extreme, there are things which endanger the environment and the proof is all around us.

Taking care of the earth air and water is no different than taking care of the home you live in. The earth air and water, plant and animal life sustain us so why would we not take care of it?

It’s quite selfish to do otherwise.

There are a lot of things we could do to reduce this problem. But too many people have me, me syndrome.

    1. We won’t as long as people do not realize the seriousness and as long as they are selfish and only think of the now.

I’d personally like my grandchildren to have a clean drink of water, climates that are tolerable for crops, and human as well as animal’s life, and all their children to come.

So, I recycle when possible, I try not to run my air full-blast all the time, I don’t leave water running unnecessarily even though I pay no water bill here where I am. I don’t leave devices running when I’m not using them and when I leave the house I turn the air up so it won’t be coming on every five minutes while there is no one here to be hot.

See how easy it is? Yes easy, but God forbid anyone should be the least bit inconvenienced.

    2. I hoped not to spark a discussion of this nature. Maybe I should have found a different use for the word “frequency.” At the time, I thought it would be fun to entertain everyone with a humorous look at the situation.

But now that Pandora’s box has been opened, let me just say this. There are ways to clean up the environment and stop global warming. But as long as corporations aren’t willing to do their part and most politicians don’t care, there isn’t a lot the rest of us can do. It’s better to just accept it. Things are what they are, and life will go on, one way or another. If anyone feels differently, let’s all agree to disagree.
