On a Thirty-Foot Sloop #TuesdayTidbit #Poetry

June, 1984, in my mid-twenties,
I set sale with my family under a cloudless sky
from a marina at Redondo Beach, California.
The rented boat glides through smooth port waters.
Like the passengers on Gilligan’s Island,
we anticipate a pleasant three-hour cruise.

Once we hit the waves, my stomach revolts.
Moments later, holding the leaking sack
containing what was once my lunch, Uncle Tony asks,
“Will the EPA mind if I throw this overboard?”

“No problem,” says the skipper.
He hands me a bucket,
places a hand on my shoulder
while I let it all out.

A helicopter whirrs overhead.
“They’re making a movie,” Uncle Jon speculates.
Oh boy, I always wanted to be in a movie,
Barfing on the High Seas.

Later, the skipper reminisces about man overboard drills.
Still nauseated, I glance at the water, the shore.
If I jumped in, tried to swim,
would I make it?

After three of the worst hours of my life,
I stumble onto the dock,
exhausted, sunburned—it could be worse.

Training a guide dog doesn’t end once you bring the pooch home. It’s necessary to acclimate your canine helper to his surroundings and make sure he doesn’t revert to old habits such as barking at other dogs. In today’s shared post, fellow blogger Patty Fletcher offers us a glimpse into such a training session.

“Alexa, what time is it?”

“The time is 7:58 AM. Enjoy the sunshine.” answered my Amazon® Echo as I readied Myself and Blue for our morning walk. I knew the weather was to be unbearably hot later in the day so wanted to get some guide work and exercise in before the mouth of Hell opened to blow its scorching breath into our faces.

A Satisfactory Trilogy Conclusion #FridayFunReads

The Goodbye Cafe (The Hudson Sisters Series Book 3)

by Mariah Stewart

What Amazon Says

From the New York Times bestselling author of the Chesapeake Diaries series comes an “irresistible” (Publishers Weekly) novel in her Hudson Sisters series, which follows a trio of reluctant sisters who set out to fulfill their father’s dying wish and discover themselves in the process.

California girl Allie Hudson Monroe can’t wait for the day when the renovations on the Sugarhouse Theater are complete so she can finally collect the inheritance from her father and move on with her life. After all, her life and her fourteen-year-old daughter are in Los Angeles.

Allie’s divorce left her teetering on the edge of bankruptcy, so to keep up on payments for her house and her daughter’s private school tuition, Allie packed up and flew out east. But fate has a curveball or two to toss in her direction.

She hadn’t anticipated how her life would change after reuniting with her estranged sister, Des, or meeting her previously unknown half-sister, Cara. And she’d certainly never expected to find small-town living charming. But the biggest surprise was that her long-forgotten artistry would save the day when the theater’s renovation fund dried up.

With opening day upon the sisters, Allie’s free to go. But for the first time in her life, she feels like the woman she was always meant to be. Will she return to the West Coast and resume her previous life, or will the love of “this amazing, endearing family of women” (Robyn Carr, #1 New York Times bestselling author) be enough to draw her back to the place where the Hudson roots grow so deep?

My Thoughts

In fiction, characters change in the course of the story. Unlike that of her sisters, Allie’s character takes more time to evolve. So, I can see why The Goodbye Cafe is told primarily from her point of view, whereas in the first two books, the point of view shifts between each sister. The epilogue, told from the point of view of the sisters’ aunt and Hudson family matriarch, sums things up nicely.

If you read the entire trilogy in order, starting with The Last Chance Matinee, then The Sugarhouse Blues, and finally The Goodbye Cafe, what I’m saying should make more sense. You can’t read just one of these books because although the second and third volumes provide some background information, you won’t get the whole story. I like the way the last book brings it to a satisfying conclusion. This is a trilogy I highly recommend.

Montezuma’s Revenge #It’sSix-Sentence-StoryThursdayLinkUp

Image contains: Abbie, smiling.

The approaching train’s ding ding ding awakened me from a fitful sleep, as I lay with my father on cement next to the railroad tracks. In June of 1973, I was twelve years old, and we were in Mexico, where we’d spent the past few days.

After studying Spanish at home in Tucson, Arizona, for a few months, Dad and I decided to travel south of the border, so we could practice what we learned. After taking a bus to Nogales, then a train to Hermosio, we spent a night in a dumpy hotel with no air conditioning. The next day, we took another bus to Gwymas, where we spent a couple of days in a nicer motel overlooking the sea, but the ocean, with its salty taste and sharp rocks along the shore, didn’t impress me, and we ran out of money, and I was sick all night while waiting for the train from Gwymas.

Now, we hauled ourselves to our feet, as it approached, then stopped, and as I stumbled on board, I was thankful to finally be going home.

August 17 2021

Here in Sheridan, Wyoming, the sky is dark with clouds that could be an indicator of either smoke or rain. We’re supposed to get a cold front that promises a high of sixty-seven degrees tomorrow. But today, the forecasted high is 97, and there’s a red flag warning due to possible wind shifts and thunderstorms that could cause erratic behavior by the fires in this area.
