Spring’s Hopelessness #Poetry #Tuesday Tidbit

Spring comes wet with little sun. Hope is dashed by the wind that buffets the house, rattles wind chimes, rain that drums on the roof. Without enough warmth, grass, flowers, trees, shrubs won’t grow.

He loves the sun, can’t get enough. It’s one of his few pleasures, since he can no longer walk or use his left arm or care for himself. After a brutal winter with endless snow, frigid temperatures, he longs to enjoy the sun’s healing warmth.

It’s Raining on Prom Night #Musical Monday #Reblog

Last year when I featured this song, there would be no senior prom because of the pandemic. Now, things have changed. I recently read in our local newspaper that one of our high schools will have a senior prom this year. Hopefully, for many young people attending, this will be a memorable night, and I certainly hope that COVID numbers don’t go up as a result. Enjoy!

It recently occurred to me that because of the pandemic, there may not be a senior prom for many high school students. This came to mind while I was listening to the sound track from Grease, a movie that was popular in the 70’s when I was in high school. One of the songs on this album is the one I’m featuring today.

My Thoughts

I met the author, Joan Myles, years ago through Behind Our Eyes, a writers’ organization to which I belong. Her work, filled with plenty of vivid imagery, has always fascinated me. I reviewed her first collection, One with Willows, here after it came out.

In One Glittering Wing, I like the way Joan incorporates the collection’s title into her poem, “Death.” I can relate to the poems, “Walls,” “Tammy,” and “Shivah” as a result of my personal experiences. My favorite is “Dancing with Emily Dickenson,” which inspired me to write a poem about dancing with Billy Collins. Other poems touch on nature, human relations, and additional subjects sure to resonate with many readers. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the poetry of life.

The First Day of School #It’s Six’-Sentence Story Thursday Link Up

Janice’s effervescent demeanor seemed to put her kindergarten students at ease. Most of these children had never been in a classroom, but what they didn’t know was that she was just as scared as they were, since this was her first day of her first teaching job. She tried not to let her apprehension show, as she guided the children, one by one, into an adjoining cloak room, showing them where they could hang their jackets and store their backpacks. She greeted anxious parents, assuring herself, more than them, that their little ones were in good hands, and reminding them when to pick them up. Finally, when all the children were seated in a circle on the floor, she sat down among them, and said, maybe a bit too eagerly, “Good morning. I’m Miss Duffy, your teacher.”

Did you ever complain while doing your math homework and ask, “Why do I need to learn this?” Probably someone responded by telling you that no matter what you choose to do with your life, you’re going to have to use math in some way.

It turns out this is true, even if you plan to spend your life cleaning up after animals. Scientists have applied their finely-tuned brains to unlock the mysteries of what happens on the other end of an animal’s body. To put it a bit more bluntly, thanks to a bit of math, we now know just how long it takes for animals to poop and pee.
